Install MT 4.1 di Windows XP

Ternyata meng-install MovableType di Windows XP lebih mudah sekarang...

Sebelum mulai... kita siapkan ini dulu ya :
* Movable Type version 4.1b3-en with: Professional Pack 1.1 download
* WAMPserver 1.7.3 download
* Windows XP SP2
* ActivePerl 5.10.0 download

Asumsi awal:
Di komputermu, Kamu hanya punya 1 harddisk ya...

Langkah-langkah:
01. Install WAMPServer nya dulu... (versi 2.0 juga bisa)
Saran di install di directory : c:\wamp\

02. Install ActivePerl
Harus di Directory : c:\usr\

[Check] Add Perl to the PATH environment variable
[Check] Create Perl file extension association

** Edit di WAMPServer config files httpd.conf sesuai di bawah ini:
a. cari Options Indexes FollowSymLinks --> rubah ke Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI
b. cari #AddHandler cgi-script .cgi --> hapus tanda # dan rubah ke AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl

** Install via PPM - Perl Package Manager (dijalankan via command line dengan mengetik ppm): install packages DBI & DBD-mysql
catatan: kalau di repository standard tidak ada DBD-mysql coba tambahkan repository address ini : http://cpan.uwinnipeg.ca/PPMPackages/10xx/package.lst dan http://www.bribes.org/perl/ppm/package.xml

The following are little things you might consider as you move along the path to sustainability. The list is incomplete, but should get the ball rolling towards change.

Design and strategy
- Design for re-use
- Maximize the shelf-life of your design
- Scrutinize the efficiency of your selected method
- Compare the impacts of each concept you develop
- Employ targeted efforts instead of mass mailings
- Do your proofing on-screen
- Encourage rich PDFs for annual reports
- Eliminate blank pages in your booklets and brochures
- Use office scrap paper or a tablet for sketching and brainstorming
- Learn about greenwashing, promise never to engage in it, and call out
any product guilty of it

Production
- Use local vendors who are committed to the environment
- Print on PCW stock
- Try running your next project on cotton or kenaf fiber if it's available to you
- Maximize use of the entire press sheet
- Minimize ink coverage
- Learn the words chlorine-free and vegetable-based and insist upon them
- Choose products that are manufactured with renewable energy
- Keep tabs on the latest printing and production technologies

Soft-launch PRALANGGA.ORG

Project terbaru aku sudah di soft-launch-kan :) PRALANGGA.ORG "Our Peacekeeping Journey". Dengan catatan roll-out resmi nya pada Hari Kemerdekaan RI tahun ini.

Pada awal tahun ini, sang pemilik situs Luigi PRALANGGA menghubungi saya untuk me-redesign website nya. Saya juga diminta selain men-desain ulang juga membantu "bagian dapur" website ini (thanks Mas Luigi, saya hitung-hitung jadi "correspondent" it nya).

Jujur saja, hampir 5 design interface yang sudah di rancang sampai bertemu dengan design terakhir yang bisa dilihat pada situs tersebut. Beberapa kali saya malah bosan dengan desain yang sudah hampir rampung... dan pada akhirnya dapat juga desain yang "sreg"

Situs ini mengunakan Textpattern 4.0.5 sebagai engine CMS nya --- rancangan awalnya akan melanjutkan / mengunakan MovableType... Sehubungan MT memasuki versi 4.0 yang belum final release, jadi kesempatan menguji kehebatan TextPattern... Nyatanya TextPattern Rocks! Thanks buat Mas Kus untuk TxP plugins gravatarnya ya.

Situs ini sudah tercatat pada situs welovetxp.com. Coba lihat entry nya di sini. Bangga juga bisa hadir di situs ini.

Apa yang saya belajar dari project ini... wah banyak... Mas Luigi datang ke saya awal tahun bukan hanya memberikan saya project freelance... tapi saya bisa berteman dengan beliau. Banyak hal-hal mengenai Pasukan Penjaga Perdamaian dan orang-orang dibalik itu yang bisa saya kenal dan mengerti tugas-tugas mulia mereka; yang tidak pernah saya tahu selama ini --- Thanks... menjadikan dunia ini selalu damai...

Tunggu saja, saya akan mempersiapkan interview dengan Mas Luigi pada posting berikutnya. Sementara itu saya akan menulis pertanyaan-pertanyaannya.

Selamat Tinggal Google Adsense

Saya memutuskan untuk meniadakan iklan-iklan dari Google Adsense di semua halaman website aku. Sekedar bagian untuk "clean up" dari halaman website nya... kemudian persiapan untuk menaikan desain baru seluruh website ini... jadi tunggu saja kehadirannya...

BTW, terima kasih buat Google Adsense --- karena saya sudah mendapatkan beberapa check yang belum saya uangkan karena gak tahu tempat penukarannya...oke deh... Selamat tinggal Google Adsense...

MovableType 4.0 beta 5 dan Textpattern 4.0.5

Bukan sebuah kebetulan MovableType 4.0 beta 5 (MT4.0b5) dan Textpattern 4.0.5 (TXP4.0.5) mempunyai urutan angka-angka 4.0.5 :)

Trus... apa hubungan nya dengan saya ?
Gini... Saya mo bicara satu persatu mengenai MT dan TXP...

Pertama, MovableType (MT) 4.0
Sudah sekian lama mengunakan MT, saya terkesan banget dengan kehadiran MT 4.0 yang bener-bener keren... bukan hanya interface nya tapi kemampuannya sudah cangih deh...
Sekarang di local server ku sedang aku kutak-katik MT 4.0 beta (yang terbaru beta 5)... Mempersiapkan design baru vikingkarwur.com (VK) dengan versi finalnya MT 4.0 --- MovableType sudah jadi "bahasa alami" dalam pengunaan CMS, ***apalagi*** MT sudah memasuki Open Source.

Kedua, TextPattern (TXP) 4.0.5
Beberapa project terakhir saya, berhasil saya port ke TXP 4.0.4 (akan di update ke 4.0.5). Apa keren-nya TXP ? Gini, saya seneng banget dengan kecepatan implementasi dari hasil interface design (sudah berbentuk CSS/XHTML) menjadi website yang online dalam waktu kurang dari 5 jam. Ini sudah saya pernah coba.
Memang saya tadinya kurang suka dengan interface admin nya TXP; tapi sekarang da gak masalah lagi karena sudah ada "Interface Admin Lift-Up" nya. Malah saya sudah kutak-katik supaya sesuai dengan keinginan dari klien saya. Wow.

Trus kalau ditanya pilih MT atau TXP ? saya pilih 2-2 nya... Kenapa ? Untuk beberapa hal kedua nya tidak dapat dibandingkan... saya memilih 2-2nya karena, membantu pekerjaan saya setelah design interface selesai... saya tinggal memilih mau yang cepat saya pakai TXP & kalau memilih MT saya bisa "explore" lebih banyak dan butuh waktu extra...

Nah, altenatif pengunaan aplikasi sejenis bisa pakai MODxCMS, WordPress, RadiantCMS (RoR powered)...

Jadinya MT & TXP sudah jadi "engine standard" di vikingkarwur.com gitu...

Beta Testing : Reinvigorate

reinvigorate.net : Measure. Analyze. Evolve.

Sedang melakukan beta testing untuk aplikasi gratis sejenis Google Analytics. Kesan pertama keren juga (mirip Mint - tapi gratis!).

* Sejauh ini saya puas mengunakan reinvigorate di 3 website yang saya kelola.
* Sama senangnya ketika mengunakan Google Analytics.

Weblog Usability: The Top Ten Design Mistakes

Weblogs are often too internally focused and ignore key usability issues, making it hard for new readers to understand the site and trust the author.

Weblogs are a form of website. The thousands of normal website usability guidelines therefore apply to them, as do this year's top ten design mistakes. But weblogs are also a special genre of website; they have unique characteristics and thus distinct usability problems.

One of a weblog's great benefits is that it essentially frees you from "Web design." You write a paragraph, click a button, and it's posted on the Internet. No need for visual design, page design, interaction design, information architecture, or any programming or server maintenance.

Weblogs make having a simple website much easier, and as a result, the number of people who write for the Web has exploded. This is a striking confirmation of the importance of ease of use.

Weblogs' second benefit is that they're a Web-native content genre: they rely on links, and short postings prevail. You don't have to write a full article or conduct original research or reporting. You can simply find something interesting on another site and link to it, possibly with commentary or additional examples. Obviously, this is much easier than running a conventional site, and again indicates the benefits of lowering the barriers to computer use.

As a third benefit, weblogs are part of an ecosystem (sometimes annoyingly referred to as the Blogosphere). This means that whatever good postings exist are promoted through links from other sites. More reader/writers see this good stuff, and the very best then get linked to even more. As a result, link frequency follows a Zipf distribution, with disproportionally more links to the best postings.

Some weblogs are really just private diaries intended only for a handful of family members and close friends. Usability guidelines generally don't apply to such sites, because the readers' prior knowledge and motivation are incomparably greater than those of third-party users. When you want to reach new readers who aren't your mother, however, usability becomes important.

Also, while readers of your intranet weblog might know you, usability is important because your readers are on company time.

To reach new readers and respect your existing readers' time constraints, test your weblog against the following usability problems.

The Corporate Weblog Manifesto

Thinking of doing a weblog about your product or your company? Here's my ideas of things to consider before you start.

1) Tell the truth. The whole truth. Nothing but the truth. If your competitor has a product that's better than yours, link to it. You might as well. We'll find it anyway.

2) Post fast on good news or bad. Someone say something bad about your product? Link to it -- before the second or third site does -- and answer its claims as best you can. Same if something good comes out about you. It's all about building long-term trust. The trick to building trust is to show up! If people are saying things about your product and you don't answer them, that distrust builds. Plus, if people are saying good things about your product, why not help Google find those pages as well?

3) Use a human voice. Don't get corporate lawyers and PR professionals to cleanse your speech. We can tell, believe me. Plus, you'll be too slow. If you're the last one to post, the joke is on you!

4) Make sure you support the latest software/web/human standards. If you don't know what the W3C is, find out. If you don't know what RSS feeds are, find out. If you don't know what weblogs.com is, find out. If you don't know how Google works, find out.
